The Elwell Feed and Grain Company is named after Craftsman Structure Hall of Fame Member Dick Elwell. Our structure is based on the Monday Grain Company in North Dakota, but feed and grain mills can be found in almost every corner of the United States and Canada. The prototype was built during the age of steam, but survived into the diesel era. There are many examples of small wooden mills still in existence and operation today.

The Elwell Feed and Grain Company represents the random architecture that is common for such structures. Mill owners built and enlarged on an as-needed basis with little thought to aesthetic plausibility, only functionality. Boxcars and hoppers delivered bulk and bagged product, and carried away the same. Boxcars were unloaded by hand into trackside augers that carried the product in the mill where it was sorted and stored by category. Hoppers emptied their product into slots between the rails. Hopper and boxcar loading of bulk products were accomplished by a gravity system.
